Garage doors rarely fail without warning. Catching the early signs means a quick service instead of an emergency repair, or a car stuck in the garage.
1. It's getting louder
New squeaks, grinding or banging usually mean dry or worn rollers, loose hardware or a spring problem. Cleaning and lubricating fixes many noises. If the noise comes back or sounds mechanical, book a service.
2. It moves slowly or jerks
A door that hesitates, shudders or moves unevenly may have worn rollers, damaged tracks, a spring that has lost tension or a motor working too hard.
3. It feels heavy when opened by hand
Disengage the motor with the door closed and lift it by hand. A balanced door should lift with moderate effort and stay roughly where you leave it halfway up. If it's very heavy or drops, the springs need adjusting or replacing.
4. It's uneven or sagging
If one side of the door sits lower than the other, or there's a gap under one end when closed, a cable or spring may be damaged. Stop using the door until it's been checked.
5. The safety features fail
If the door doesn't reverse when it touches an object, or keeps closing when the safety beam is broken, it isn't safe. This is especially important in homes with children or pets.
6. The motor is struggling
Clicking, humming without movement, remotes that only work up close, or a motor that keeps tripping are all signs it needs attention.
Service or replace?
A service and a few new parts will fix most problems. Replacement starts to make sense when:
- the door is dented, rusted or warped beyond repair
- parts are no longer available for your door or motor
- you want better insulation, security or street appeal
- repair costs are adding up year after year.
Not sure which way to go? We can assess your door during a service and give you honest advice on repair versus replacement.
