When a garage door refuses to move, the cause is usually simple. Work through this list from the top. The first few you can check yourself in a couple of minutes.

1. Flat remote batteries

If the wall button works but the remote doesn't, the remote battery is the usual suspect. Replace it, and try the spare remote. If neither works, the remote may need re-coding to the motor.

2. No power to the motor

Check that the motor is plugged in, the power point is switched on and the safety switch or circuit breaker hasn't tripped. Many motors have a light. If it doesn't come on, the motor isn't getting power.

3. The door is locked

A manual lock that's been left engaged will stop the motor from lifting the door. Some motors also have a "vacation lock" setting that disables remotes. Check both.

4. Safety beams blocked or misaligned

Sectional doors and many roller doors use infrared safety beams near the floor. If something is in the way, or a beam has been knocked out of line, the door will refuse to close or will reverse. Clear the area, wipe the lenses and check the indicator lights on both sensors.

5. The motor has been released

If someone has pulled the manual release, the motor will run but the door won't move. Re-engage the release (see How to Open a Garage Door Manually).

6. Tracks or rollers obstructed

Leaves, dirt or a bent track can jam the door. Look along the tracks for debris or damage. Clean them out, but don't try to straighten a badly bent track yourself.

7. Broken spring or cable

A loud bang from the garage, a door that's suddenly very heavy, or one side hanging lower than the other usually means a broken spring or cable. Stop using the door and call a technician. Running the motor against a broken spring can damage the motor and is unsafe.

8. Motor or control board fault

If the motor hums, clicks or flashes an error light but nothing moves, it may be a failed motor, gearbox or control board. Older motors also wear out. If yours is more than 10 to 15 years old, replacing it may cost less than repeated repairs.
