The side tracks (guides) on a roller door collect dust, leaves, spider webs and grit. Over time that build-up makes the door noisy, causes it to stick, and makes the motor work harder. Cleaning the tracks takes about 15 minutes and is one of the easiest ways to keep your door running well.

What you'll need

  • a soft brush or old paintbrush
  • a vacuum with a nozzle attachment
  • a damp cloth and mild detergent
  • silicone spray lubricant (optional)

Step 1: Make it safe

Close the door and switch the motor off at the wall so it can't be triggered while you're working.

Step 2: Brush out loose debris

Run a soft brush down the inside of both tracks from top to bottom to loosen dirt, leaves and webs.

Step 3: Vacuum the tracks

Use the nozzle attachment to suck out everything you've loosened, paying attention to the bottom of each track where debris collects.

Step 4: Wipe them clean

Wipe the inside of the tracks with a damp cloth and a little mild detergent. Dry them with a clean cloth. Don't use harsh solvents or abrasive pads, as these can damage the finish.

Step 5: Light lubrication (optional)

A light mist of silicone spray on the inside of the tracks helps the curtain glide. Don't use grease or heavy oil, which attract dirt and make the problem worse. Wipe off any excess, turn the power back on and run the door a few times.

While you're there

Check the tracks for dents or bends, look for loose mounting brackets, and inspect the bottom seal. If a track is bent or the door is rubbing on one side, book a service rather than trying to straighten it yourself.
